Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by John Barstow (HON 90)

I am fully supportive of the honours system as an integral part of British public life and I do not see the case of any major changes.

However if people see there is a need to change the `British Empire' prefixes then can I suggest that "Commonwealth" is the most logical and natural substitute. This is also because several Commonwealth countries like Papua New Guinea and Barbados share our honours system.

Such a move could also enhance Commonwealth awareness in the UK very important in a diverse and multi-racial society.
