Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by Anne McLaren (HON 92)

I WOULD LIKE TO RESPOND TO QUESTION 12

The concept of an `Order of the British Empire' does indeed seem rather outdated. It could at least be replaced by `British Commonwealth'. And I strongly urge that titles such as those you list should be abandoned. I have a personal interest and dislike of `Dame', redolent as it is of the pantomime man-dressed-as-comic-woman! More seriously, the fact that a Dame's spouse gets no title, while a Sir's wife is a Lady could surely be challenged under the Sexual Discrimination Act.
