Memorandum by R F Dykes (HON 98)
I take the liberty of writing to you since there
is a committee of MP's sitting to review the process of awarding
this Country's honours because for many years I have come to disrespect
this twice annual distribution of this Country's awards,
As a youngster (now 84) my father always said
that the awards were a recognition of the recipient's work for
the country and indeed the recipient must have been very proud
of that recognition. These days not sowe get pop stars,
those with car racing connections, family heads of supermarkets
and many more that make a long list, who not only in their work
have accumulated a fortune but then receive an honour for doing
soI have no respect for them whatsoever.
It is time this country changed its attitude
towards honourslet us recognise the hard work of nurses,
and the skill of surgeons that goes unnoticed in the daily life
of this country- the patience and skill of the London bus driverand
why not, a lowly job in some people's mind, and of course those
who do voluntary work of every description in their town and village
for charities and local organisations. We in this town do have
an annual reception and giving of a certificate for a few of those
who have given their time and effort to help the elderly, the
poor, the sick- but not a dicky bird from government to recognise
those people. Except a very minor award.
It is time governments of all parties stopped
the awards to those who have already made a success of their lives
and live comfortable lives, but hope that such awards will bring
in more votes. I would suggest that guide lines be given to a
small non political committee (without any influence from the
governments of the day) who will select the honours and awardsignoring
all advice from the PM whoever it may beand the recommendations
of that committee be accepted by the Queen.
