Mr. Davidson: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what definition of the terms (a) directorate, (b) section, (c) unit and (d) team he uses in relation to his Department's internal structures. [221235]
Mr. Straw: The Foreign and Commonwealth Office does not have specific definitions for the terms directorate, section, unit and team. However, guidance issued to staff on 6 August 2004 in the context of continuing organisational change is that the long-term aim should be consistency across the Office, while accepting in the short-term this may not be possible.
With the exception of the Strategy Units the term Unit will only be used to describe a temporary operation.
Changes can be phased in over time.

Some Departments report directly to a Director General or the Permanent Under Secretary.
