Mr. Charles Clarke [holding answer 17 March 2005]: The cost of keeping a Category A" prisoner at a high security prison such as HMP Belmarsh is approximately £40,000 per annum. Taking account of time served on criminal charges, etc. we estimate that detention has cost approximately £1,300,000.
