Memorandum submitted by Marika Sherwood
Very briefly, the imminent closure of the CRE's
library to the public will leave a great gap in the availability
of materials relating to the struggles for racial equality in
the UK and also on the history of Black peoples here. The only
possible alternative for reseachers, campaigners, et al, is the
under-funded library of the Institute of Race Relations.
If it is not possible to fund the CRE's library
adequately, then would it be possible to approach the IRR with
a view to turning it into a national library?
Without the easy and free availability of such
a research library I would not hesitate in making the public argument
that the government is deliberately stopping research in this
area.
