Voluntary withdrawal can cover a number of reasons. In Phase 1 homesickness and adaptation to Service life are significant factors; in Phase 2 academic problems play a large part. In a number of cases trainees voluntarily withdraw to pre-empt failure.

Notes:

    —  The Ph1/Ph2 boundary was not considered particularly significant for reporting purposes until Federated Defence Training Establishments came into the picture. These statistics are therefore derived from returns collected for a different purpose and may not be 100% accurate.

    —  Rating Phase 1 pipeline eight weeks or 14 weeks, Officer 12 weeks or one year. Therefore note no direct correlation possible between Phase 1 and Phase 2 start figures.

    —  Figures reflect individuals' first Phase 2 start—some (~100 pa) change branch and start again, possibly in a different establishment. These restarts are not included.

    —  Seven Special Entry Seamen went direct to sea from Phase 1 training in 2002-03. This type of entry then discontinued.

    —  Officer figures exclude Medical and Dental Officers who do not generally follow a recognisable Phase 1/Phase 2 training pattern. Officer DMETO starts shown are Queen Alexandra Royal Naval Nursing Service (QARNNS.)

    —  Pilots, Observers and Air Traffic Controllers are Phase 2 trained by the RAF at a variety of locations.

    —  These figures exclude Royal Marine figures as their training does not move to Phase 2 training as ratings in the Royal Navy.

*(In July 2004 data collection problems prevented figures from being collated.)
Explanatory notes:

    —  The figures are taken from the Operating Divisions monthly SATT returns.

    —  The figures are taken as a snapshot on the last working day of the month by the Op Div and therefore do not necessarily provide a real picture of trends, fluctuations and averages through the month and year.

    —  There are many ways of measuring SATT, this particular measurement is of those trainees awaiting trade training for 30 days or more.

    —  The total training population to which these Armcen figures relate is in the order, annually, of around 450. The average monthly figure for the TY is shown (current TY not yet complete).
