  The information given below was obtained by keyword searches of HSE contacts with the Army, Royal Navy and RAF where accidents or inspections concerning service personnel using handguns, rifles, grenades etc were referred to.

RAF

    —  Inspection of shooting range precautions for RAF Cadets (2001).

    —  Investigation of fatality when a rifle was accidentally discharged during a live firing exercise (2003).

ROYAL NAVY

    —  Fatal shooting of a Junior Marine during a training exercise (2000).

ARMY

    —  Investigation of a complaint relating to health risks at indoor rifle ranges (1996).

    —  Inspection of a live firing training exercise at the Sennybridge Range—Good conditions observed (1997).

    —  Investigation of fatal shooting accident at Sennybridge when live ammunition was mixed with blanks (1998).

    —  Inspection of live-firing exercise at Davyshiel Battle Simulation Area—Good conditions observed (1998).

    —  Inspection of Army Cadet Force activities, including weapons training—Good conditions observed (1998).

    —  Investigation of fatal accident when a grenade exploded unexpectedly at Warcop Range (1999).

    —  Inspection of Army Cadet Force training on Isle of Wight, including weapons training—Good conditions observed (1999).

    —  Inspection of arrangements for night training exercise by Cadets at Longmoor Training Camp (1999).

    —  Investigation of an accidental shooting at Sennybridge involving a GPMG machine gun (2000).

    —  Investigation of fatal shooting accident at Catterick caused by failure of the mechanism of a pistol (2000).

    —  Investigation of an accident involving a stun grenade (2000).

    —  Inspections of Grenade, anti-tank, mortar and Individual Battle Shooting Ranges at Sennybridge (2002).

    —  Inspection of Platoon Sergeants Battle Course at Sennybridge (2002).

    —  Discussions about revised publication setting out Army training standards for use of infantry weapons—improvement of previous version (2002).

    —  Visit to discuss Army planning of field firings and Weapons Danger Areas (2002).

    —  Inspection of safety instruction systems, planning and live firing at Platoon Sergeants Battle Course (2002)—Good conditions observed.

    —  Inspection of preparations and planning for Section Commanders Battle Course, including attendance at a daytime exercise—Good conditions observed (2002).
