STUDENT SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT (SSDU)
The SSDU has two functions:
(1) Production of e-Learning Packages
(2) Advice and Development
e-Learning Packages are used by students
to reinforce, apply and comprehend new learning on-line. They
can access the e-Learning packages via any AWARE terminal. This
means they can use e-Learning seven days a week from 7.00 am to
11.00 pm.
All e-Learning packages are designed to support
probationers during their training. It gives them the opportunity
to test their knowledge and apply new skills in a safe, controlled
and interactive environment. The packages are NOT the white notes
on a monitor so it's important that they read and learn their
white notes before logging on to e-Learning.
Sometimes staff may set an e-Learning package
to complete as part of an action plan to aid a student's development.
There are also e-Learning packages that are compulsory, to be
completed in their own time, these are the equivalent of "read
only" white notes.
New packages are being written all the time
and when they are released students are informed by their staff,
via the wipe-board on the second floor and on the e-Learning main
menu.
Basic IT skills are required to use these packages
and all students receive an input in week 1 of their training
on how to access the e-Learning material. Everyone has to complete
the package "Intro to e-Learning" before they can look
at any subsequent packages.
Contact on (50914).
Advice and Development section exists
primarily to advise students on the Recruit Foundation Course
who experience difficulty in passing Knowledge Evaluation Exercises
(KEEs), the almost weekly exams testing students' theoretical
knowledge.
Staffed by five Constables, the section is open
during school hours covering both shifts. Students are usually
referred when the number of exam failures reaches a pre-determined
trigger point. The students then receive two or three one-to-one
tutorials depending on their needs.
Staff use a range of recognised assessments
and learning techniques to assist the students to achieve satisfactory
exam results.
The techniques used include aspects of Neuro
Linguistic Programming NLP) and hypnosis.
A Study Club runs each Wednesday 9 am to 11
am and 3 pm to 7 pm offering advice on study and revision techniques.
The SSDU is located on the first floor of the
main classroom block. The unit is managed by a PS and all staff
are experienced trainers.
