AIR CADET GLIDING RISK MITIGATION

VGS vehicle/equipment operation hazards Risks involved in operation of vehicles and specialist equipment ie glider winches and refuelling bowsers 1.Operators subject to specialist training and examination

2.Procedures developed to minimize risk

3.COSH assessments where applicable

4.Regular QA visits from external auditors.

Airfield ground operations hazardsAirfields can be confusing places for those unfamiliar with aircraft ops. Dangers posed by aircraft, vehicles and machinery 1.Formal arrival briefings for all visitors

2.Untrained visitors are escorted

3.Air/Ground operations always supervised by a Duty Instructor.

Maintenance personnel are not normally present during VGS flying operations—risk to output from delayed maintenance Potential problems with aircraft may delay operations for long periods/specialist advice not available on site 1.All VGS have Technical Officers formally trained to carry out limited servicing tasks and provide guidance

2.A nominated RAF engineering supervisor is contactable by telephone during all VGS flying periods

3.ACCGS Eng Flight visits all VGS as required, subject to manpower availability, to maintain aircraft.

VGS staffing levels are variable and some posts require a high level of training and experience Volunteer staff may leave at short notice and new recruits can take a long time to become productive. Presents a risk to out put through insufficient trained staff 1.Maintain a throughput of trainee instructors

2.Advise HQAC if staffing levels fall below appropriate level

3.ACCGS to provide instructor assistance if manning falls below required level
