Select Committee on Defence Written Evidence

Memorandum from a Naval recruit

I am emailing you because of the strong view which I have formed during my experience of Phase 2. I strongly wish to complain about the running of this organisation. I have been in Phase two training from *** and have been back-classed for failure of Two exams and had to be reclassed because of the time I missed because of a medical condition. Phase Two training group was formed for duty of care but this was not the case for me. My DO made me feel depressed and drove me to self harm—something that will haunt me for the rest of my life. The duty of care system does not work for all of us. I had a medical condition that affected me really badly, when I told the DO, he told the other officer in the Phase Two training group when I wished this not to happen. Today I am putting in a complaint about my situation. But nothing will happen. He singles me out and keeps a keen eye on me.
