Select Committee on Defence Written Evidence

Assessments of the work and effectiveness of empowered officers

Most units are finding that their empowered officers are utilised only on an infrequent basis. Most complaints and requests for help are received and dealt with by the Chain of Command. The welfare system, doctors, padres, WRVS, UWOs, effectively identify and deal with any remaining complaints and welfare cases.

Units where the trainees spend most of their time training away from their chain of command, such as DST, find that the empowered officer becomes a more important focus for complaints.

HQ ATRA will be conducting a formal review of the Empowered Officer scheme during the latter part of 2005.
