Select Committee on Defence Written Evidence

NCO trainer core competencies

Following the establishment of the Defence Centre for Training Support (DCTS), instructor training has been revised and all instructors must attend the Defence Instructional Techniques (DIT) Course prior to posting to a training unit. To meet the required Training performance Statement, DIT students are assessed on the following competencies:

    —  Bearing

    —  Good rapport

    —  Preparation

    —  Confidence

    —  Absence of mannerisms

    —  Clear audible voice

    —  Enthusiasm

The qualities and competencies of trainers was also a topic of discussion at the recent Individual Training Best Practice Seminar held on 14 October 2004. Both the seminar audience and the manning agencies agreed that instructors should:

    —  Be volunteers

    —  Possess good leadership skills

    —  Have excellent personal qualities and be a good role models

At the seminar it was suggested that all command and leadership courses (and perhaps relevant specialist courses) for NCOs and junior officers should comment on an individual's suitability to be an instructor. The outcome of the seminar is currently being taken forward as the competency framework for instructors is being developed at DCTS.
