Training of RAF Chaplains

1.  SELECTION

  Clergy must pass RAF and Chaplaincy Selection procedures.

2.  RAF CRANWELL (EIGHT WEEKS)

  Successful candidates attend an eight-week Specialist Entrant & Re-Entrant (SERE) course at RAF

College, Cranwell, which provides specific military training for all professionals (Medical, Legal, Chaplaincy). This course is to be extended to 14 weeks by 2006.

3.  ARMED FORCES' CHAPLAINCY CENTRE (TWO WEEKS)

  On successful completion, newly-Commissioned Chaplains attend a 10-day special-to-Chaplaincy course at the Armed Forces' Chaplaincy Centre (AFCC). This course includes:

  Introduction to the Chaplains' Branch.

  Theology of Chaplaincy.

  Role of the Chaplain.

  The Geneva Conventions.

  Chaplaincy Concept of Operations.

  Spiritual Development.

  Beliefs & Values Programme.

  Equality & Diversity.

  Working in Teams.

  Child Protection.

  Working with other Faith Groups.

  Welfare Issues.

4.  ON-THE-JOB TRAINING

  Chaplains are appointed to a team under the supervision of a Senior Chaplain responsible for the ongoing development of the team. A whole-career development programme is provided for all Chaplains (Annex A). A Chaplain appointed to a training unit will be required to attend pre-employment training.
