Training of Army Chaplains
INTRODUCTION
1. All newly-joined chaplains undertake
induction at the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre (AFCC), followed
by Phase 1 training at RMAS, and then Phase 2 training AFCC.
Induction training
2. The aim is to introduce new chaplains
to the Army and provide an initial grounding. The course objectives
include an introduction to:
(a) Essential administration involving pay,
documentation and clothing.
(b) The History, Ethos, Traditions, and organisation
of the Army and the RAChD.
(c) The differences between military chaplaincy
and civilian ministry.
(d) Basic physical training instruction.
Phase 1
3. RMAS delivers the Professionally Qualified
Officer Course (PQO Course). The training objectives of the course
include:
(a) Effective command of a sub unit to accomplish
a task or mission, including routine administration and logical
and clear communications with superiors and subordinates.
(b) An introduction to military operations
and platoon-level tactics.
(c) An understanding of weapons safety, navigation,
signals, drill, first aid and hygiene in the field and the maintenance
of standards of individual fitness.
Phase 2
4. The aim of Phase 2 training is provide
specialist training in order to prepare them for appointment as
a Unit Chaplain. The course objectives include:
(a) Understand the role of a Chaplain and
of military chaplaincy.
(b) Understand command and control of chaplains,
especially relationships with COs and Senior Chaplains.
(c) Deliver Individual Training Directive
11 training (Moral Understanding).
(d) Able to administer an Army church and
associated accounts.
(e) Awareness of Army welfare organisation,
other agencies and their roles.
(f) Awareness of career management mechanisms
and procedures.
(g) Understand the routine functioning of
a unit in camp and the field.
(h) Continue physical training preparation.
