Suicide and open verdict deaths: Conclusions

It is important to bear in mind the small number of deaths on which these analyses are based, thus making the interpretation of these findings limited and complex statistical analyses inappropriate.

The rates of suicide among untrained personnel do not differ significantly from those of an equivalent officer/rank status who are trained.

Comparisons with the UK general population, indicate that overall there are fewer deaths from suicide than would be expected among untrained other ranks. Analyses by age highlight more deaths among males <20 years of age (trained and untrained) than expected based on equivalent UK general population data, however, these increases were not statistically significant.
