Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Written Evidence

Memorandum submitted by Mr James Scougall (Z28)

  As a spraying contractor, the positive effects I can see the VI having on my business include:

    —  the VI has increased the advice and information received;

    —  VI training ensures sprayer operators are aware of their responsibilities, and keeps them up to date on the latest regulations and environmental issues;

    —  the VI Sulphuric Acid code also helps to inform the public, agents and neighbouring land-owners more of what is going on, ensures that they understand when and why a job is being done and that the reason is for the health of the potato crop;

    —  due to increased regulations and environmental issues, it has encouraged smaller growers to use a professional contractor, particularly where they may have out-dated equipment/information, and is making them aware of the cost-effectiveness of using a contractor.
