Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Minutes of Evidence

Supplementary memorandum submitted by Animals in Mind

  1.  I would have liked to have responded to Mr Davidson's point about dogs that chase sheep. As it is already an offence for dogs to be "at large" amongst sheep, there seems no urgency in trying to correct this chase response. The simplest and by far the most sensible and safe option, is keep a dog on a lead in that situation.

  2.  I gave the Committee some rough figures on sales of shock collars from sources on the internet. I would like to clarify and amend the figures I gave.

The original sales figures were from 1998 and were worldwide, not just the USA. They were: 300,000 remote training collars, 600,000 containment systems, and 600,000 bark collars.

Originally I thought I had found a source that gave lower figures for 2003. As we have been unable to find the source again, I will have to conclude this was an error on our part.
