Letter to the Secretary of State for Foreign
and Commonwealth Affairs from the Chairman of the Committee, 28
June 2004
BRITISH INDIAN
OCEAN TERRITORY
ORDERS
Thank you for your letter of 15 June, enclosing
the copies of the two Orders in Council relating to the British
Indian Ocean Territory.
At its last meeting, the Committee discussed
your letter and the two Orders in Council. Although they noted
the proviso in your letter of 12 July 2002 regarding prior scrutiny
of such orders, Members were surprised that you felt unable to
share the contents of the two measures with them before they were
made by Her Majesty. I would be grateful, therefore, if you could
clarify exactly why these orders were not sent to the Committee
in draft before the Privy Council meeting on 10 June.
I look forward to your reply.
Rt Hon Donald Anderson MP
Chairman of the Committee
