Letter to the Secretary of State for Foreign
and Commonwealth Affairs from the Chairman of the Committee, 20
October 2004
Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee have
followed with interest and concern the aftermath of Hurricane
Ivan's passage through the Caribbean. In particular, we have noted
the continuing disruption to the lives of ordinary people in the
Cayman Islands, where we understand that 95% of the housing stock
on Grand Cayman was damaged, with six thousand homes remaining
uninhabitable as at 8 October.
I would be grateful to learn what support and
advice the Governor, the FCO generally and other government departments
have been able to give the Cayman Islanders as they strive to
recover from the effects if the hurricane, and what further assistance
has been requested, offered or planned. I am copying this letter
to Hilary Benn and to Tony Baldry.
