Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

Letter to the Chief Minister, Government of Gibraltar, from the Chairman of the Committee, 16 September 2004

I enclose copies of a recent exchange of correspondence between the Committee and the FCO, about the April 2000 arrangements relating to Gibraltar authorities.

The Committee has now invited the FCO to provide it with a more detailed explanation of the exchanges summarised in the third paragraph of the letter of 7 September and of the reasons given to the British Government by the Governments of Spain and Gibraltar for their refusal to accept application of the arrangements in this case.

The Committee is similarly interested in learning exactly how each of the other dossiers listed in that letter is, or promises to be affected.

As well as seeking further clarification from the FCO, the Committee would welcome your observations on this issue, and how it affects Gibraltar.

A response by the end of October would be particularly helpful.

Rt Hon Donald Anderson MP

Chairman of the Committee

16 September 2004
