Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

HONG KONG

Letter to the Parliamentary Relations and Devolution Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, from Kit Dawnay, Committee Specialist, 22 April 2004

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Committee discussed the political and human rights situation in the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of Hong Kong. Their debate sprang from reports of the demonstration that took place on 11 April 2004 in protest at the latest efforts to curtail democracy in the SAR.

As a result of the discussion, the Committee has instructed me to write and request the Foreign Office's comments on developments in Hong Kong since the elections of 24 November 2003. I would be grateful if I could receive a response to this request no later than Monday 24 May.

Kit Dawnay

Committee Specialist
