Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

Letter to the Clerk of the Committee from the Parliamentary Relations and Devolution Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 11 November 2004

EQUATORIAL GUINEA

Thank you for your letter of 20 October about media reports of Spanish naval activity in relation to Equatorial Guinea.

We have checked the position. The Spanish government issued a press statement on 29 January about this. The FCO endorses the statement.

  I hope this is helpful.

Annex 1

Office of Diplomatic Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Spain

Postponement of the trip of two Spanish naval vessels to the Gulf of Guinea: The Office of Diplomatic information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued the following press release

The idea for the voyage, now postponed, came at the invitation of the Equatorial Guinean authorities following a visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs last November and is part of the cooperation between the Armed Forces and Security forces of both countries that, in the last few months, has allowed Equatorial Guinean officers to participate in peacekeeping and border control training courses.

With regard to the apparent misunderstandings that have arisen with certain opposition political parties of Equatorial Guinea and in the Spanish press, it has been decided, by the common agreement of both governments, to postpone the courtesy visit of the two Spanish naval vessels until after the legislative elections in Equatorial Guinea.
