Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Written Evidence

Submission from Phil Hope MP

You wrote recently for views on the modernisation of the Commons sitting hours.

I am concerned that the new hours have not been a success in the way they were originally intended, and indeed have had unhelpful unintended consequences.

I support the proposal for starting an hour earlier and finishing an hour early on Thursdays. But I believe Tuesdays should return to the 2.30 pm start and 10.00 pm finish.

I do not believe the September sittings have worked and, moreover, have proved to be a real problem for the work I used to do with schools and others in this period in my constituency. This period should be revoked.
