Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Written Evidence

Supplementary submission from Mr John Wilkinson MP

Thank you for your further letter of 29 June 2004, about the review of sitting hours in the House of Commons. I have no quarrel at all with the new pattern of recesses which makes very good sense so long as we do not sit too late into July when the school holidays have begun.

I am also extremely happy with the new daily timetable of work in the House which makes excellent sense to me. There was little merit in sitting late into the night and the new pattern of timings on all five working days of the week should be kept.

The Westminster Hall debates and timings are also a success. I do not believe there is sufficient pressure to return to the old sitting hours in this parliament.
