Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Written Evidence

Submission from Mr David Watts MP

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding House of Commons sitting hours.

I believe that the new hours have made the House less effective and that they have reduced the social and business interaction between Ministers and Members.

I believe that there is a majority of Members who would wish to try and find a compromise between the old and the new systems. I would suggest that we return to the old hours on Monday and Tuesday and that we continue with the new hours on Wednesday and Thursday.

I would also suggest that we end the practice of returning during the summer recess which I believe to be both costly and ineffective.

I hope that you find my views helpful.
