Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons Written Evidence

Submission from Ms Dari Taylor MP

Thank you for your letter of 29 June 2004 referencing the Modernisation Committee's review of the House of Commons' sitting hours.

I supported and, on the whole, have found the new sitting hours to be satisfactory. I have, however, found it hard on many occasions to combine debates in the Chamber with meetings with individuals and organisations from my constituency (formal and informal). Whilst I previously found it fairly straightforward to participate in debates and do other things, I now find my schedule to be increasingly tight.

My family home is in Durham and consequently I go home from the House to an empty flat, which is frankly not attractive. Whilst l would not want to go back to a 10.00 pm finish, I would have thought that an 8.00 pm or 9.00 pm finish on Tuesday and Wednesday would be perfectly acceptable.
