PROPOSALS FOR
INCREASED MAXIMUM
PENALTIES UNDER
THE CRIMINAL
JUSTICE (NORTHERN
IRELAND) ORDER
2004
Malicious wounding or grievous bodily harm—on
conviction on indictment, to increase from five years to seven
years.
Assault occasioning actual bodily harm—on
conviction on indictment, to increase from five years to seven
years.
Common assault—previously a summary offence,
this offence to be alternatively tried on indictment with a maximum
penalty of two years imprisonment, or an unlimited fine, or both.
Criminal damage—the maximum sentence of
imprisonment on conviction on indictment to increase from 10 years
to 14 years imprisonment.
Harassment—previously a summary offence,
this offence to be alternatively tried on indictment with a maximum
penalty of two years imprisonment, or an unlimited fine or both.
Putting in fear of violence—the maximum
sentence of imprisonment on conviction on indictment to increase
from five years to seven years.
