6.2 As regards staff costs, there were various changes in the
grading and full or part-time nature of some posts in the office.
These enabled the staffing position to stabilise, however, and
overall the cost of staff was slightly down. Running costs were
significantly lower, mainly because we did not (as in the previous
year) incur substantial transcription costs in connection with
a major inquiry.
6.3 During the past year some overseas visitors have
expressed surprise at (but a welcome for) the relatively modest
scale and cost of the Commissioner's office. I am satisfied that
the present level of staffing is adequate to meet the current
level of demand on the office. If the needs of the work were to
require an increased level of resourcing, the House of Commons
Commission has indicated that it would be willing to make available
whatever was required.[21]
