Select Committee on Transport Written Evidence

Supplementary memorandum by the National Coastwatch Institution (SAR 14A)

SEARCH AND RESCUE

At our meeting you asked for a list of MCA Watchstations that NCI could possibly use for coastal surveillance.

Our requests have been in existence for some time now and I enclose a copy of a list we submitted in April 2002 to MCA, concerning 19 sites with a summary reply received in October 2002. A long wait!

NCI does not accept that the presence of radio equipment precludes use of a Watchstation for surveillance. We have several Stations housing MCA and Police radio equipment, which operate without difficulty. More Police equipment is scheduled. We are now told that a Station is leased solely for Coastguard use. If MCA agrees that National Coastwatch can operate the Station, the owner is most unlikely to object. This results from our enquiries.

NCI will continue to press this case with MCA administration, with which we are increasingly unimpressed.

Again, our thanks for your interest in National Coastwatch; with encouragement and assistance, we will continue to expand a valuable public service.
