Select Committee on Transport Written Evidence

Correspondence from the National Coastwatch to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, 4 April 2002

As suggested when you kindly met the Trustees last month, I now enclose a list of the CG Stations in which the NCI are very interested and would wish to obtain or use jointly in the future.

We would be grateful for your Estates Dept. comments on the likelihood or otherwise of possible transfer to NCI lease/licence etc. We realise that, in a number of cases, the actual ownership of the building may no longer be in HMCG hands and that in probably all instances the land itself is owned elsewhere, but your advice would be much appreciated.

A D King

General Secretary

10BrixhamDevon We are particularly keen to obtain access to at least the upper floor of this key building, observing that in the past the RNXS was allowed to use it. We appreciate that it is the Emergency MRCC and if necessary NCI would vacate it if Kings Quay went down. An alternative would be for NCI to provide external access to the Lookout level. There is considerable local support for NCI providing a visual facility there.

12NewhavenSussex As with Brixham, we are very interested to obtain the top (lookout) floor here. Again it may be that you would wish NCI to provide an external access so that the watchkeepers would not have to pass through HMCG "engineering" room.

15Southbourne(Hengistbury Head) A key Station for NCI at the entrance to the Solent
16Needles Old Lookout The NT will not allow access in winter through their (closed) restaurant. We could provide access externally if the Lookout floor is still HMCG property.

Notes

  1.  In all cases, especially where HMCG has allowed NCI access to an existing CG building, our watchkeepers would withdraw if required for Coastguard occupation.

  2.  Many of the above may not now be owned by HMCG, advice would be appreciated as to the current owners of the building.

  3.  There are other Stations in the pipeline already being pursued on a local basis at this point.
