Correspondence from the Maritime and Coastguard
Agency to the National Coastwatch Institution, 11 October 2002
MARITIME AND
COASTGUARD AGENCY
ESTATE
I am writing in connection with your letter
of 4 April to Mr Astbury concerning a number of properties, which
you consider, form part of the Agency's estate. Mr Astbury has
requested that I reply on his behalf, as I am the Agency's Estate
Manager. First of all I would like to apologise for the delay
in replying. Going onto the actual list of properties, which you
have forwarded, I would like to confirm the following:
1. Clenchwarton
I am afraid that the Agency has no property
at this location.
2. Hunstanton
The Agency currently leases an Industrial Unit
in Hunstanton. It formally leased a building on the sea front
as well an Annex at the Town Hall. However, the former Look Out
building which was being used as a Remote Radio Site as well as
the Town Hall Annex were formally surrendered back to the Landlords
some years ago. The Look Out was being advertised for disposal
in the National Press some months ago so I cannot confirm details
of Current ownership. The Annex is of course owned by Hunstanton
Town Council.
3. Wells Next to the Sea
The Agency owns a Coastguard Auxiliary station
at Wells Next to the Sea but the building is fully utilised for
equipment storage.
4. Cley Next to the Sea
The building at "Hilltop", Cley next
to the Sea is still being used as a permanent Coastguard Auxiliary
Station. It is extremely small (21.4m2) and is therefore fully
utilised for equipment storage.
5. Cromer
The Agency leases an industrial unit on the
edge of Cromer.
6. Southwold
Although the building at Station Road Southwold
is owned by the Agency, the land is leased and contains a restrictive
clause stipulating Coastguard use only. Again, a very small building
fully utilised for equipment storage.
7. Donna Nook
The Agency leases an Industrial Unit for use
a Coastguard Auxiliary Station.
8. Mablethorpe
The Agency does not currently have a presence
in Mablethorpe.
9. Skegness
The Agency leases a property from the Local
Authority; the lease contains a restrictive clause specifying
that the building is solely for Coastguard use.
10. Brixham
Although the Agency has a Maritime and Rescue
Sub-Co-ordination Centre at Kings Quay, Brixham, this is a fully
operational station, which is fully utilised.
11. Helmsdale
Although the Agency owns a building in Helmsdale,
the land upon which it is located upon is leased. Again, the land
is solely for Coastguard use. The condition of the Auxiliary Station
at Helmsdale is such that it is no longer viable to maintain.
The Agency is currently in the process of exploring options to
dispose of the building once an alternative property becomes available.
12. Newhaven
The Agency are currently involved in redevelopment
of the site which will involve the building being reduced in size
and this will house radio equipment only. Plans are well advanced
with this scheme.
13. Fairlight
This site is a strategic Radar communication
site and the building is fully utilised to accommodate the associated
equipment.
14. Hayling Island
This is a strategic Agency building which is
fully utilised on a permanent basis; again the land is leased
and the lease contains a restrictive clause.
15. Southbourne (Hengistbury Head)
This site is subject to a lease, which restricts
usage for Coastguard purposes only. In addition, its size is such
that it is fully utilised for housing radio equipment only.
16. Needles Old Look Out
This is no longer in Agency ownership.
17. Bembridge
Another strategic Agency building which is fully
utilised on a permanent basis; again the land is leased and the
lease contains a restrictive clause.
18. Dungeness
This building is leased by the Agency for use
by MCA only.
19. Watchet
No Agency property at this location.
