COASTGUARD STATION. HENGISTBURY HEAD

Further to our earlier correspondence and discussion, I would list the reasons why NCI, under growing pressure, wishes to reactivate this unmanned Watchstation.

  1.  The large area in view from the Station covers one of the busiest leisure waters in UK.

  2.  RNLI rate the area as second busiest in UK for callouts from boat and water users in trouble. They would welcome our assistance, as usual.

  3.  The Coastguard is sometimes overwhelmed with work in this area during the high season.

  4.  A huge number of leisure walkers use the area. (One million people per annum).

  5.  A manned facility using filly trained volunteer Watchkeepers with direct VHF / Landline communication to Coastguard and all other emergency services can be provided AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC. The unmanned Station is of no help to small boats or walkers in difficulty.

  6.  If leased to NCI, the building will be carefully maintained at no cost to the public. We know about security.

  7.  MCA radio equipment will be guarded and untouched. Several NCI Stations have both MCA and Police radio equipment allowing the owners 24 hour access when needed.

  8.  If MCA in a particular emergency wish to occupy the Station, NCI could move off at once, or stay and assist, if required.

  9.  NCI has substantial Public Liability, Personal Accident and Equipment insurance everywhere it operates. MCA would, therefore, be indemnified for damage, illegal entry, etc. at no cost to MCA funds.
