Select Committee on Trade and Industry Minutes of Evidence

Examination of Witnesses (Questions 200 - 201)

TUESDAY 20 APRIL 2004 (Morning)

CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE ARMS TRADE

Q200  Judy Mallaber: You think that most of those additional actions could be covered by a change in their current policy and practice, rather than changes to the law.

Ms Feltham: Yes, and I think they certainly seem to be moving in the right direction on this.

Q201  Judy Mallaber: How much extra value do you think you would get from these extra actions. Are there some that you regard as being particularly important amongst those areas?

Ms Feltham: As has been said more generally by Transparency International, there is the question about what agents are up to. We do know that they have been heavily involved in some of the arms deals, using agents. It is only information that drips out, from the press usually, occasionally, and we would like to see that really highlighted and looked at; but it does seem to be being taken on board rather more now.

Chairman: Ms Feltham, we would be very grateful for the additional memo. Thank you for your time this morning.
