To

Amend the Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure 1993 so as to remove the

bar on the consecration of women as bishops; and for connected purposes. 

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and

consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present

Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

Amendment of the Measure

(1)   

The Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure 1993 (No. 2) (“the Measure”) is

amended in accordance with the provisions of this section.

(2)   

In section 1(1)—

(a)   

after “ordained to the office of priest” insert “or consecrated to the office

of bishop”; and

(b)   

at end add “or consecrated as bishops”.

(3)   

Section 1(2) is hereby repealed.

(4)   

In section 2(1)(a), after “ordained to the office of priest” insert “or consecrated

to the office of bishop”.

(5)   

In section 2(1)(c), after “officiate as a priest” insert “or as a bishop”.

(6)   

In section 2(8), after “ordained to the office of priest” insert “or consecrated to

the office of bishop”.

(7)   

In section 9, after “priests” insert “or bishops”.

Short title, commencement and extent

(1)   

This Act may be cited as the Bishops (Consecration of Women) Act 2006.

(2)   

This Act shall come into force on the date six months after it has received Royal

Assent.

(3)   

This Act extends to England (including the Diocese of Europe) and the Isle of

Man.

(4)   

This Act may be applied to the Channel Islands, as defined in the Channel

Islands (Church Legislation) Measures 1931 and 1957, or either of them, in

accordance with those Measures.
