Sure Start

Ed Balls: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what funding has been allocated to Sure Start for (a) 2005–06 and (b) future financial years; and if she will make a statement. [17012]

Beverley Hughes: Funding allocated to Sure Start for 2005–06 was £1,140,000,000. Funding allocated to Sure Start is £1,696,000,000 for 2006–07 and £1,809,000,000 for 2007–08. Funding for 2008–09 and beyond is an issue for the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review.

This funding represents a significant investment in support of the 10-Year Strategy and the Government's vision to ensure that every child gets the best start in life and to give parents more choice about how to balance work and family life. The increase in funding is substantial, showing a 59 per cent. increase in 2007–08 compared to 2005–06.
