Work Force Development Confederation Budgets

Mr. Lansley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the total spending on workforce development confederation budgets was in (a) 2003–04 and (b) 2004–05; and what the reasons are for the difference in the two figures. [57726]

Mr. Byrne: The total spending on workforce development confederation budgets was £3,436 million in 2003–04 and £3,820 million in 2004–05. The increase in expenditure arises from medical school expansion, the additional costs of increased numbers of non-medical professional staff in training and the additional costs of inflation.
