Student Midwives

Mr. Baron: To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what the total cost to her Department of training student midwives was in each year since 1997-98; [71735]

(2) how many student midwives there were in each academic year since 1997-98; how many student midwives were in receipt of a bursary in each year; and what the total cost to public funds was of bursaries to student midwives in each year; [71736]

(3) if she will list the institutions which offer training to student midwives. [71739]

Information on the number of student midwives in each academic year since 1997-98, the numbers in receipt of a bursary in each year and the total cost to public funds of bursaries to student midwives in each year are shown in the following table.

Information on the institutions, which offer training to student midwives, is not held by the Department. The Nursing and Midwifery Council is responsible for approving education institutions to run midwifery training programmes.

Work Permits

Mr. Austin Mitchell: To ask the Secretary of State for Health when she plans to issue final guidance for the NHS on work permits, categories and the detailed operation of the new immigration rules. [65029]

Details of the new requirements of the immigration rules are available on the Immigration and Nationality Directorate's website at: www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk.

Full guidance on the implications of the changes for the medical community is available on the NHS Employers website at: www.nhsemployers.org.

Departmental officials are discussing points for clarification with the British Medical Association and guidance will be updated where necessary.

Asylum Seekers (Legal Aid)

Damian Green: To ask the Minister of State, Department for Constitutional Affairs pursuant to her answer to the right hon. Member for Haltemprice and Howden of 6 July, Official Report, column 489W, on asylum seekers (legal aid), what the cost was of legal aid for asylum and immigration cases in cash terms in (a) 2004-05 and (b) 2005-06. Court of Protection

Willie Rennie: To ask the Minister of State, Department for Constitutional Affairs how many people have died while their cases were being dealt with by the Court of Protection in each year since 1997. [71742]

Ms Harman: The number of people who have died while under the jurisdiction of the Court of Protection pursuant to the proceedings of the Mental Health Act 1983 from 1999 to 2006 are as follows:

The court only holds records for six years following the end of its involvement in the client’s case and it is not therefore possible to provide reliable data prior to this period. The court does not hold reliable information on the number of donors who have died while under its jurisdiction pursuant to the proceedings of the Enduring Power of Attorney Act 1985.

Freedom of Information

Mr. Heald: To ask the Minister of State, Department for Constitutional Affairs how many representations she has received about her Department’s handling of Freedom of Information requests. [69994]

Vera Baird: Complaints about the Department’s handling of Freedom of Information are dealt with under the Department’s internal review procedures. Details of internal reviews handled by my Department

in 2005 will be published in the annual report on Freedom of Information which will be published shortly.

Mr. Pickles: To ask the Minister of State, Department for Constitutional Affairs what criteria the Government used to identify and classify public authorities when drawing up Schedule 1 to the Freedom of Information Act 2000. [70606]

Vera Baird: Schedule One to the Freedom of Information Act 2000 now lists the majority of bodies and offices which are subject to the Act.

In drawing up Schedule 1, central and local government bodies, the health, police and education sectors were largely listed by generic descriptions, the majority of which refer to the statutory basis for those bodies’ functions.

Parts Six and Seven of the Schedule list “other public bodies and offices” in England and Wales, and in Northern Ireland respectively.

The bodies and offices in these Parts have been identified as meeting the two criteria set out in section 4 of the Act, namely:
