Contaminated Land

Mr. Peter Robinson: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland pursuant to the Answer of 24 October 2005, Official Report, column 88W, on contaminated land, what sites in Belfast the Department has identified as contaminated from former land use. [52878]

7 Jun 2006 : Column 683W

David Cairns: The Waste and Contaminated Land (NI) Order 1997 provides a statutory definition of contaminated land, based on the risks of significant harm to human health and the environment, or pollution of controlled waters given the current land use and environmental setting.

The Department of the Environment has not identified any former industrial sites in Belfast as contaminated land. Its Land Use Database has identified locations where former industrial use may have caused contamination, but does not quantify the areas of land involved. The Department of the Environment plans to update the Database over the next 12 months.

Crosshill Quarry

Dr. McCrea: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland gave authority to the contractor for the cutting of the railway carriages in Crosshill Quarry. [33565]

David Cairns: The Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland was not required to give authority to the contractor for the cutting of the railway carriages in Crosshill Quarry.

Environment and Heritage Service was under no requirement to take a direct involvement in the cutting and reburial of the carriages.

When the work commenced, Antrim borough council was the waste regulatory body for Crosshill Quarry. EHS (on behalf of the Department) did not take on this responsibility until the introduction of the Waste Management Licensing Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 on 19 December 2003.

Curricula

Mr. Lidington: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will commission research into the experience of other European countries of the use of the teaching and learning methods embodied in the Early Years Enriched Curriculum Project in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement. [74989]

Maria Eagle: Throughout the development of the Foundation Curriculum, which includes the enriched curriculum for children in Years 1 and 2, the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) took account of international and national research. The council commissioned a literature review from QUB Research Team which was submitted in September 2001. This literature review drew attention to good practice in early years education and international comparisons in relation to such factors as performance, literacy, numeracy, and emotional and social development.
