Select Committee on Defence Minutes of Evidence

Examination of Witnesses (Questions 100-105)

AMBER MARTIN, KELLY SAUNDERS, SHEREE HART, CHRIS HORSEMAN, LUCY FAWCETT AND DAVID PYM

24 APRIL 2006

Q100  Chairman: In the Service school?

David Pym: Yes. In Gütersloh, where I used to live, it was strict, not very strict, but it did not have any tolerance at all for bullying, disruption or anything like that.

Q101  Mr Crausby: Is that because it is a 100% Service school?

David Pym: Yes. It was not 100% Service but the majority were Service. There was no tolerance.

Q102  Chairman: Tolerance of bullying is a different thing, is it not?

David Pym: No tolerance of disruption or misbehaviour, general stuff like that.

Q103  Mr Crausby: You think there is more tolerance of misbehaviour in schools that are not Service majority?

  David Pym: Yes.

Q104  Chairman: Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

David Pym: It depends how you see it. I am on the fence as far as that is concerned. I just crack on with it. Other people may see it as a bad thing.

  Q105  Chairman: Lucy?

Lucy Fawcett: The only difference I can think of is that all the schools I went to abroad were set up for Service kids so everyone was in the same boat anyway whereas here they are not. That is the only difference I can think of. I cannot say whether I preferred one to the other because it was the school rather than the situation.

Chairman: I think we are done. Before you stop, can I say one thing: we have come here to take evidence from you but the one impression you must go away with is that we are proud of what your parents do for this country. I think we are very lucky indeed to have your parents working in the Services. We are also very lucky that they have got you lot, if I may put it like that, because an important part of them is you. Thank you for the support that you give them. Thank you very much indeed for coming along to talk to us today, it has been very useful. One thing I would ask is I know some of you have got your parents here and we are now moving into an hour or so session with parents and families. If any of the parents feel that they can join in answering some of the questions, that would be extremely valuable. We want to hear not just from the children and the teachers but from the parents and, frankly, we have not got enough of the parents. There must be some parents around. Thank you very much indeed.
