Memorandum submitted by Michael Fabricant
MP
Thank you for your letter of 25 November concerning
your Committee's inquiry into the Schools White Paper.
My main concern is that schools should have
genuine independence to determine their catchment areas and the
means by which they select students. Too often parents are given
little choice by Local Education Authorities as to the schools
they are allowed to select.
If this means that catchment areas will overlap
or that headteachers wish to take students from beyond a catchment
area on an ad hoc basis, I believe it will result in an
improvement in the choice available to parents and their children.
