Select Committee on Education and Skills Minutes of Evidence

Examination of Witnesses (Questions 520-521)

MR MAURICE SMITH, MS PENNY SILVESTER, MR DAVID SHERLOCK CBE AND MR JOHN LANDERYOU

16 JANUARY 2006

Q520  Chairman: Could we have a note for that for our inquiry into Special Education?

  Mr Smith: Of course.2

Q521  Chairman: Is there anything you want to tell the Committee before we finish that you have not been able to express?

Mr Smith: If I may, Chairman, in response to Mr Wilson's questions because I did not get an opportunity to speak, our view also is that the deal is done; the line is drawn. We do not see it as a takeover; we see it as an expanded remit for Ofsted and we are looking forward to welcoming our inspectorate colleagues from the Adult Learning Inspectorate and using their expertise and building on that expertise to make a better inspectorate for children and learners. This is not a win/lose thing; this is about creating something better for this country. I am committed to that; I know David is; I know our chairman is. That is where we come from.

Chairman: Well said, Chief Inspector. A marriage made in Whitehall if not in heaven. Thank you for your attendance; it has been a good session.

2  Ev 108-109.
