Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

Letter to the Parliamentary Relations and Devolution Team from the Clerk of the Committee

You now have the uncorrected transcript of Douglas Alexander's evidence to the Committee on 3 May, and I have agreed with Mark Turner a number of points on which the Minister was asked for or volunteered further material.

I am writing to request answers on two further points.

First, the Committee discussed after the evidence session Mr Heathcoat-Amory's questions to the Minister at Qq 163-169. The Committee resolved to seek a full written answer to Mr Heatchcoat-Amory's question about treaty changes. I would be grateful if that answer could be included with the notes already promised.

Second, had the Committee had more time with the Minister, it would have asked about the proposal of a prominent German politican, Markus Meckel, to create a European Foundation for Democracy. On 27 March, the then Foreign Secretary told Denis MacShane MP that he would "follow up" this question (HC Deb, 27 March 2006, col 561). The Committee would like to know what was the outcome of this follow-up.

I would be grateful for a response not later than Monday 5 June.

Steve Priestley

Clerk of the Committee
