Letter from Sir David Green KCMG, Director-General
of the British Council to the Chairman of the Committee
Thank you for the opportunity to appear in front
of the Foreign Affairs Committee last week. We have now received
the list of supplementary questions from the Clerk and will provide
detailed replies shortly.
I would also like to take this opportunity to
give a note to the committee to expand on the answer I gave in
response to Gisela Stuart's question on how parliamentary accountability
functions for an organisation which operates at arm's length from
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The accompanying note sets out the agreements
between the British Council and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
which establish the mechanisms under which parliamentary accountability
is achieved. I hope that this can be added to the record and taken
into consideration should the Committee wish to pursue this issue
further.
