The following table shows the provisional rates of self-inflicted
deaths per 100,000 prisoners in public and contracted prisons,
2003-04 and 2004-05. It also shows the three-year rolling average
rate of self-inflicted deaths. The latter is a more reliable indicator
of underlying trend.

Notes:
1. The population divisors used in calculating these
rates are based on the figures reported on PSIMON. The official
annual population figures produced by RDS vary slightly but are
not available sufficiently quickly to be used for in year reporting.
2. PECS (Prisoner Escort and Custody Services) had no
self-inflicted deaths in 2004-05 and only one in the three year
period ending March 2005. Comparable rates for this sector are
not meaningful due to difficulty defining divisor.
