Select Committee on International Development Written Evidence

Letter to Chairman of the Committee from the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for International Development

Following the oral evidence taken before the International Development Committee (IDC) on Thursday 23 March 2006 on conflict and development, I said that we would write to the Committee with follow up information on three points.

For the first of these, Major General Stewart undertook to provide the IDC with a written answer following his reply to Q46 during the hearing. The question was: "Has the Government discussed with the Government of Uganda military assistance of any kind to help find or capture the LRA commanders?" A detailed response to this question can be found at Annex A.

Following Q71 of the hearing, Major General Stewart also said that he would provide a written response to the question "How long is the Gender training for HMG Armed forces being sent to conflict areas?" Again, a detailed response to this question can be found at Annex B.

Finally, following John Bercow's request for further information to Jim Drummond on Strategic Conflict Assessments (Q55), please find some further practical examples of how the Strategic Conflict Assessment has been used to good effect at Annex C. I also enclose a DFID booklet of guidance notes on conducting conflict assessments, and a synthesis report of conflict assessments done in Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Nepal and Sri Lanka.[1]
