Select Committee on International Development Written Evidence

Annex A

Has the Government discussed with the Government of Uganda military assistance of any kind to help find or capture the LRA commanders?

Our Defence Attache in Kampala holds regular discussions with field commanders and Kampala based UPDF (Uganda People's Defence Force) on a wide range of issues, including the LRA, peace support operations and defence spending. However the government of Uganda has not formally requested any kind of military assistance from the UK to find or capture the five Lord's Resistance Army commanders facing International Criminal Court arrest warrants.

The UK does provide a small amount of training annually for the Ugandan People's Defence Force. Funding is sourced primarily from the Africa Conflict Prevention Pool and the Defence Assistance Fund and is targeted at increasing national capacity to conduct Peace Support Operations.

DFID has provided approximately £0.5 million between December 2001 and December 2005 to help the Ugandan Ministry of Defence carry out Uganda's first strategic Defence Review. The aim of the Defence Review is to make the Uganda People's Defence Force more professional and accountable within the resources available for defence expenditure.
