Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

13 Letter from Howell James, Permanent Secretary, Government Communications, Cabinet Office to Julia Goldsworthy MP

COI EVALUATION REPORTS

We exchanged letters earlier in the year about COI evaluation reports and I promised, in my letter of 8 February, to send you some more detail on communications case studies and on the work the COI is undertaking to create a database for departments to share knowledge in confidence on campaign effectiveness.

In terms of the database COI is in the process of collecting data on forty eight campaigns; details of those campaigns are attached in the Annex to this letter. As I mentioned in my letter of 16 December, when finalised, the actual campaign summary reports are owned by the individual departments and you will need to approach them to get copies.

The database of communication case studies that my team commissioned COI to develop are all on the internet on the Government Communication Network website: http://www.comms.gov.uk/engage/case-studies.html.

The case studies are all part of the Engage programme. Led by me, Engage is a three year programme designed to re-position strategic communication in Government. More details are on the Engage website: http://www.comms.gov.uk/engage/index.html.

I do hope this is useful. I am copying this letter to Tony Wright.
