Select Committee on Transport Written Evidence

APPENDIX 23

Memorandum submitted by Mr Geoff Simmons

My main concern is regarding the charging to park at railway stations. I am a British citizen who has just returned from five years in Germany. The cost of parking my car at Southampton Parkway is £5 per day and the cost of a return train ticket to Bournemouth is £7.

The financial case for commuting to work in Bournemouth by train is completely ruined by the car park charge. Without this charge I would seriously consider commuting by train. Currently, I drive to Bournemouthand park in a residential area for nothing. This is a 70 mile round trip that could be avoided.

The easy response to this question is "The car park is privately owned" however, if we are serious about encouraging the use of public transport, we must make cost effective park and ride available.
