To

amend the law so as to require traffic authorities to cause traffic signs to be

placed on or near roads for the purpose of indicating the location of historic

county, town and village boundaries; to require the Ordnance Survey of Great

Britain and Northern Ireland to mark the boundaries of the historic counties,

towns and villages on its maps; and for connected purposes. 

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and

consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present

Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

Duty of traffic authorities to indicate historic boundaries

(1)   

A traffic authority must take such steps as they consider reasonable to cause

traffic signs to be placed on or near roads for the purpose of indicating the

location of historic county, town or village boundaries.

(2)   

In this Act—

“boundaries” means such boundaries as may be determined—

(a)   

in respect of England, by the Secretary of State,

(b)   

in respect of Scotland, by the Scottish Ministers, and

(c)   

in respect of Wales, by the Welsh Ministers;

“historic county, town or village” means such places as may be designated

for the purposes of this Act—

(a)   

in respect of England, by the Secretary of State,

(b)   

in respect of Scotland, by the Scottish Ministers, and

(c)   

in respect of Wales, by the Welsh Ministers;

“traffic authority” has the same meaning as in section 121A of the Road

Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (c. 27) (traffic authorities).

Amendment of Traffic Signs Regulations 2002

(1)   

The Traffic Signs Regulations 2002 (S.I. 2002/3113) are amended as follows.

In Regulation 4 (interpretation) at the appropriate point insert—

““historic county, town or village” means such places as may be

designated for the purposes of the Historic Counties, Towns and

Villages (Traffic Signs and Mapping) Act 2007;

“historic county, town or village boundary” means such boundaries as

may be determined for the purposes of that Act;”.

(3)   

In Part V of Schedule 7 (boundary signs)—

(a)   

in the description under diagram 2401, after item (d) insert “; or

(e)   

historic county, town or village boundary”; and

(b)   

in the table following that description, in Item 4, for “or a London

borough” substitute “, a London borough or a historic county, town or

village”.

3       

Short title

This Act may be cited as the Historic Counties, Towns and Villages (Traffic

Signs and Mapping) Act 2007.
